Changing your business address on Google might seem simple, but there are certain pitfalls to avoid. After all, you don’t want potential customers seeing the wrong address somewhere on the web - or worse, having your Google Business Profile (GBP) disappear due to verification or suspension issues caused by the address change!

How Do I Change My Address on My Google (My) Business Profile?

To change your business address on your Google Business Profile (formerly known as Google My Business), follow these steps:

  1. Visit your GBP in the GBP Manager.
  2. Select “Edit profile”.
  3. Click on “Location”.
  4. Now, click on the little pencil icon next to “Business location” to change your address.
  5. Enter your new business address and click on “Save”.

Tip from our customer success manager Diana: You’ll need to re-verify your Google Business Profile after changing your address! Google requires this to confirm that your business is actually located at the new address. Be sure to follow the verification steps promptly and accurately to keep your GBP active. Without verification, your profile won’t be visible to customers! However, if the change is just small such as a different street in the same city, you might not have to re-verify again.

Follow the Correct Address Guidelines

Make sure to enter your full and correct address, including details like the floor number, building number, or store number. This is especially important if you have multiple locations at the same address - like a restaurant chain with two or more spots in a shopping mall or airport. Clearly distinguishing each location prevents your GBPs from being marked as duplicates, which could cause one of them to disappear from search results. Make sure to always include a postal code as well! Especially if you are using Obenan for your listing management, you need to enter a postal code in order for our systems to correctly sync your information with Google and all other business directories! Don’t risk losing revenue over a simple mistake!

Also, avoid using descriptive addresses like “Across from Central Park.” Always enter your official, registered address. Learn more about the address guidelines from Google.

Tip: If your address doesn’t have a street number or you can’t find the location in the system, you can use the pin option and pin your business directly on the map.

Pitfalls When Changing the Business Address on Google

  1. Not Verifying Your New Address: Some businesses change their address and then completely forget about their GBP, not realizing they need to re-verify it for it to appear in Google search results and on Google Maps. Skipping this step can even result in your profile being suspended! To avoid disruptions in your local rankings, complete the verification process as soon as possible.
  2. Entering the Wrong Address: A simple typo or incorrect entry can cause major headaches - lost customers, confusion, and even verification issues. Before submitting the change, double-check that your new address is accurate and matches your official business documents and website. It may sound like a small mistake, but trust us, it happens more often than you'd think!
  3. Multiple Businesses at the Same Address: If multiple businesses share the same address, Google may flag your listing as a duplicate or even merge it with another business - sometimes from a completely different owner! To prevent this, ensure your business has a unique suite number (if applicable) and provide additional proof of occupancy if necessary.
  4. Creating a New GBP Instead of Updating Your Existing One: Some businesses make the mistake of creating a brand-new Google Business Profile (GBP) instead of updating their existing one. This can lead to duplicate listings, lost reviews, and lower search visibility. Always update your current profile rather than starting from scratch to maintain your online presence and customer trust.

Learn how to update your Google Business Profile for local SEO!

Can I Change The City of My Google Business Profile?

Yes, absolutely! You can change the city where your business is located by following the steps outlined above. However, don’t delete your Google Business Profile or mark it as permanently closed when moving to a new city. Keep in mind that you’ll likely need to re-verify your GBP after updating your address.

Tip from Diana: Sometimes, your Google Business Profile (GBP) may get suspended if you change your address to a new city. This isn’t necessarily a cause for concern. You can simply appeal Google’s decision and, once the appeal is reviewed by Google Support, you’ll need to re-verify your profile.

Can I Move My Google Business Profile to Another Country?

No, you can’t move your location to a different country! If your business relocates to another country, you must mark the old location as permanently closed and create a new Google Business Profile for the new address. This is also the only scenario in which an address change requires a new GBP! For all other scenarios, remember to edit your existing GBP instead of creating a new one!

Update your Business Address Everywhere - Not Just on Google!

You might think simply updating your business address on Google is enough - wrong! You need to ensure your address is updated everywhere on the web. This includes business directory listings (yes, you might have listings you didn’t even create yourself), your website, and your social media channels.

Consistent business information across the web is crucial for your online visibility. If your NAP details (name, address, phone number) are inconsistent, not only will potential customers lose trust in your information, but search engines may also rank your business lower in local search results - costing you valuable customers.

So, don’t stop at Google! Double-check all your listings, your website, and your social media to ensure they reflect your new address.

Business Address Change Checklist

To make the process easier for you, we’ve created a smart checklist to ensure your business address change goes smoothly and your details stay consistent across the web. This will help Google rank your business higher and make it easier for potential customers to find you!

  • Change your business address on your Google Business Profile.
  • Create (or get) your list of all business directories that your business is listed on.
  • Claim listings that you haven’t claimed yet.
